'Hey tower... this might be crazy but can we land on the beach?' Beach landing pilot rushed to hospital - 7th Apr 2011



A young pilot who made an emergency splashdown on a New York beach was rushed to hospital tonight.

Jason Maloney, 24, was recorded making a series of bizarre requests and jokes to an air traffic controller at JFK airport shortly before splashing his plane into the surf on Rockaways Beach, Queens.

Maloney, a medical student at Washington's Georgetown University, was contacted by the radio tower after they spotted him on their radar, to which he said: 'Whoa...what if I want to hide from you?'

His radio chatter took a bizarre turn of events after this as he declared a few minutes later he wanted to 'drop a pastor off at JFK who is doing some medical mission work'.

When that request was rebuffed he abandoned the charade and said: 'We'll just chill here'.

It was later obvious when the plane landed that he had no pastor on board, only passengers Clarke Oler, 22, and Chelsea Protter, 21.

His father told Fox 5 news that the family had called the ambulance for him.

It is unclear why he needed to be taken to the hospital but Cornwall police called it a medical emergency.
