South African Bans Ostrich Eport as Avian Flu is detected: Culling of 5,000 ostriches gets underway today - 16th Apr 2011

The culling of around 5,000 ostriches will begin on Friday after the avian influenza outbreak on a farm in Oudtshoorn.

The national Agriculture Department implemented a self-imposed ban on export, movement and slaughtering of all ostriches in the country.

The South African Ostrich Business Chamber’s Anton Kruger said if the H5N2 virus remains contained to the one farm, they could lift the ban in two weeks.

“Intensified surveillance is currently being done to see if there is any other virus activity,” said Kruger. Source
