Their 200mph Beechcraft Bonanza nose-dived into the roof of a storage depot near a shopping mall, 35 miles north-west of Los Angeles.
The two men and two women scrambled out of the wreckage before the single-engine aircraft exploded into a fireball.
Three of them had minor cuts, while the woman passenger is said to have moderate to serious injuries.
Witness Brett Hanley said: 'They were pretty bloody in the face but they were all walking.
'They jumped in my arms and I pulled them away from the wreck. Not too long after that the thing exploded.'
The $60,000 aircraft crashed into the Wells Fargo facility at 1.30pm yesterday destroying nine units after taking off from Chino airport 60 miles away.
