End of a dictatorship: Ali Abdullah Saleh President of Yemen agrees to step down within a month after 32 years in power - 24th Apr 2011

Yemen's embattled president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has agreed to a proposal to step down within 30 days and hand power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

The plan, negotiated by Gulf Arab mediators, is a major about-face for the autocratic leader who has ruled for 32 years - but whose regime has been rocked by months of violent protests.

But in a gesture of defiance, in a speech to supporters in the capital Sana'a Mr Saleh accused protesters of 'acts of riot and sabotage' and insisted that any handover of power would be orderly.

The protest movement demanding Mr Saleh's immediate departure said that it accepted the latest draft of the deal but with reservations.

The day before, protesters staged the largest of two months of demonstrations, filling a five-lane boulevard across the capital with a sea of hundreds of thousands of people. Read More
