As the Easter holidays get under way, Julie Eurich and her son Jack are looking forward to spending their days horse-riding and visiting the local falconry centre. There will be trips out with Julie’s parents and probably a rugby match or two. In this they are no different to countless other families – yet it is the sheer normality of their Easter break that the Eurichs will treasure most.

Because for seven-and-a-half years there was nothing commonplace about their lives. In December 2002, a High Court judge in London ordered that Jack, then aged two, should be returned to his American father, Berdine LaVoy, a gun fanatic who was eventually convicted of possessing illegal firearms.

For four years, Julie did not see Jack at all as, penniless and jobless, she was forced to return to Britain so that she could raise enough money to employ lawyers. When she eventually returned to the United States, she spent another three years fighting for custody, powerless to protect her son despite her growing concern about LaVoy’s lifestyle. Read More
