Two men had to be restrained by police as the van carrying Halliwell, 47, drove to Swindon Magistrates' Court. They ran up to the van, banging on the side, and were moved back by police.
A crowd of around 50 people had gathered outside the back entrance to the court this morning to await his arrival, many shouting abuse and threats, with some women in tears.
Miss O'Callaghan disappeared after leaving the Suju nightclub in Swindon a week last Saturday after a night out with girlfriends.
Police are trawling through missing persons records in an attempt to identify a second body found after a two-day intensive search of a field.
Officers said they were shown to the spot by a suspect arrested on suspicion of killing Miss O’Callaghan.
Halliwell, from Ashbury Avenue, Swindon, was arrested by Wiltshire Police on Thursday and charged on Saturday night with killing the 22-year-old PA from Swindon.
