The Japan Meteorological Agency had earlier issued a 50-centimetre tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of Miyagi prefecture, which was shattered by the huge earthquake and tsunami that hit on March 11.
The US Geological Survey reported a 6.5-magnitude earthquake but then downgraded its strength. The epicentre was at a depth of 17 kilometres, it added.
Japan’s weather agency said that the quake was most likely an aftershock of the massive tremor more than two weeks ago, and warned of more to come.
The quake happened at 7.24am local time (9.24am AEDT time), near the east coast of Honshu.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, which reported that the undersea quake was 6.7-magnitude, said there was no tsunami threat to Australia. Read More
